Good Abattoir Guide

There are about 150 abattoirs in England, Wales and Scotland who do pigs. Some only slaughter for the big processors, and some are run by private institutes, but the remainder will process what are called “private kills” – that is the slaughter of pigs for individuals who usually have the carcass or in some cases the butchered pigs for their own consumption, that of their friends, and in some cases to sell to the public in farm shops, markets etc.

All abattoirs are overseen by the State Veterinary Service who are responsible for ensuring the welfare of animals prior to slaughter, and the Meat Hygiene Service, who are responsible for ensuring that the meat is fit for public consumption.

However many smallholders and small farmers want to ensure the highest standards of care for their animals at the abattoir, and want to know that

  • their pigs have been well treated both during unloading, and in the pens prior to slaughter
  • that they are slaughtered with care, quickly and humanely
  • that the abattoir will handle their pig carcass throughout the process to ensure the best quality meat, and ensure its traceability
  • that where the abattoir also butcher the pig, it is cut up to the customers specification, and butchered and presented professionally
  • that the abattoir is friendly to smallholders, easy to deal with, reliable, and all the other things that you want
  • Now the best people to tell you which abattoirs are good are those who currently use them, so this guide came as a response to those wanting to know how “smallholder friendly” their abattoir was.

    This guide is collated from the views of smallholders across several internet forums, and from reviews sent directly to us, and currently covers 84 abattoirs. It is therefore by its nature subjective, and should be treated as such.

    This guide was last updated the 3rd may, and currently only covers pigs (we may expand it later).

    We hope that this will be useful for people seeking pig abattoirs near them.

    - They’ve scaled back their pig slaughtering due to a huge decline in the number of pigs being produced up here. They only do pigs for a couple of hours on a Friday morning now.They’re prone to mistakes: like forgetting to deliver the carcasses to the butcher, like “forgetting” the pluck or the trotters, like forgetting to split the carcass and remove the head , like miscalculating the bill, and like delivering the wrong carcasses to the wrong customers. Scotch Premier don’t do butchering. And good livestock handling is too dependent on the individual doing lairage—there’s an excellent older chap who can sweet-talk the most recalcitrant pig or steer but there is another who, well, let’s just say I disagree with his methods. So, not exactly a recommendation!
    +We have sent at least 12 pigs thru them and never had a problem. if you want certain requirements then you need to ask clearly. They take private killings on a monday and have never been anything except courteous and helpful to me. Max weight is 120KG.
    -Scotch Premier in Inverurie lost 3 of our pigs in July this year, seemed a case of the left hand didnt know what the right hand was doing, we were NOT impressed because we had ‘sold’ those carcasses already.

    -All the slaughtermen are very rough and impatient with the animals. I have witnessed pigs being kicked and beaten with pig boards when they are confused about where they are supposed to be going. The metal gates are used as implements to slam against a pig which is being obstinate and the edges of pig boards are brought down in a chopping motion on their backs and faces if they don’t move fast enough.

    +Excellent small abattoir, we have only used them once but they seem to treat the animals well, and they offer lairage. They do cutting, the meat isn’t vac packed or labelled by weight but they do a tidy job of it and it’s relatively cheap. The butcher was very helpful and talked us through the cutting plan and the slaughterman was also very helpful. They kill pigs on Mondays

All staff we have dealt with have been great with our pigs – very calm and treating them with respect, no rough handling at all. They are slaughtered first (starting at 8am) so no long stressful wait for them. Susan, who runs the office, has also been very gentle with us! Their butchery service has been excellent – discuss your requirements with Joe (Simpson) or one of his team – will package however you want (bagged, vac pack, film covered trays etc.

No reversing, one pig or a lorry load, very reasonable prices, helpful to an idiot, packed to your requirements, great sausage, bacon and gammon, too. Big operation, very professional, and the slaughtermen have always treated my pigs with respect and patience. BUT, as it’s such a big operation, you might get stuck behind a triple-decker lorry with the haulier forcing pigs down ridiculously steep slopes. Happened to me a couple of times and the terrified squealing set off my pigs – previously lying quite calmly. If this happens to you, drive around the block for a bit until the lorry has gone.

    + 10/10 for animal welfare, 3/10 for administration (but that’s a lot better than the other way round). Their cutting is not cheap (up to £0.95 per kg) but it’s good and everything comes vac packed, weighed, labelled, bar coded etc. They also do organic, I strongly recommend the place.
    + The abattoir is Freedom Foods and Soil Association approved, the animals are all handled in a quiet manner, the lairage is monitored by CCTV and music is played to assist in calming the stock in the lairage. In three years of weekly deliveries, I have had no unpleasant incidents.

    + A very small abattoir with a smashing butcher’s shop. sausages they do for us are marvelous ,but always need to ask for offal
    +They very kindly let us observe for a day. The pigs were treated really well, it was well organised and they didn’t have to wait for long. All very gently led through to the stunning room. The slaughter was well done and properly managed for all the pigs. Staff there were excellent and really good MHS inspectors and vet.
    -My lovely rare breed pig’s meat was full of blood-splash (indicating a prolonged or ineffective slaughter),was costly, and the meat is returned en masse rather than individually wrapped

    +Sounds like a multinational monster, but actually quite tucked away and very quiet on the mornings when they take ‘private pigs’. Friendly efficient and helpful. Easy to drive around with trailer. Also do a very good butchery service in house, so you can get things exactly as you want – or take away a split carcass.
    +All the staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. This made our first experience of using an abattoir stress free which meant the pigs welfare was never compromised. The unloading area is very open should you, like us, be a towing virgin. The butchery service, although not as comprehensive as your high street butcher, was more than adequate and could be tailored to your specific requests. Overall, very pleased and would use them again.

They cut and bag my meat, are prepared to give advice and charge £38 for cut and kill with sausages extra at 70p a lb.

    + Despite the ramshackle buildings packed into a tight space, the staff and Neil James himself could not have worked harder to ensure my 6 Tamworth porkers were despatched and returned to my specification. Neil gave me personal advice on pricing, quality of the meat and future options for cuts and sausage mixes and packaging. He labels each joint individually (loin, leg, shoulder etc) and it helps having his Rare Breeds logo on the meat. Sausages done to his standard mix were pretty good.

    +Where you take them in looks rather horrible – in fact totally grim – but the guys themselves are good with the animals and we have had no complaints of them at all.
    +Shotts are really good, I normally use them. The staff are all really good and we’ve not had any bad or even slightly off putting experiences there. If you want them to do the cutting & packing, phone William in the Chapman’s shop in Wishaw. The abattoir will deliver the carcass to him, he’ll cut, pack & label for 70p per kilo including sausages (if you want bacon & ham it’s £1.40 a kilo)

Two big “buts” though: first, while we were unloading the last lot of pigs we took up there, a stream of blood or heavily bloodstained water was running down the gutter alongside where we were leading the pigs. The pigs didn’t seem to mind, but it wasn’t very nice. Second, and this is what will restrict our use of them in future, they couldn’t manage to de-hair our last 2 batches of pigs so the had to be skinned.

    + Happy to recommend, Pigs taken up to 100Kg liveweight. Accepted forms of ID: slap mark/metal tag/plastic tag Wednesday is pig day, although a limited number of sows may be booked for Thursday. The abattoir also offer a cutting and packing service.
    + I recommend Wishaw abattoir having just used it as a first timer for 2 pigs. Very helpful on the phone. I was a little put off on arrival as I could find no-one to tell me what to do and where to go but as soon as I found out where to go in – reverse into the gates on left hand side of the building as you face it. Tom the slaughter man was patient with me and the pigs in getting them out of the trailer.

    +Coates is a small family business – very happy with the service and the way they treated our animals. Pigs are only slaughtered on Monday’s, but can deliver on the Sunday. Fresh water is available in the pens, we bedded them down with plenty of straw and fed them there – stress free. Later that evening Antony (Coates) checked on them and gave them more food. First thing Monday morning (around 6am) they were slaughtered and I am sure they were treated with the utmost respect. Coates do not have a weight limit on the size of pig they can handle. The joints were all expertly cut / rolled / tied and we had a good quantity of sausage which taste amazing, and the most amazing bacon we have ever tasted! . The joints and sausages were sealed in bags and the bacon vacuum packed in lot sizes we requested.All the staff are very friendly and helpful, there prices are reasonable and I have no hesitation in giving them a full 10/10 in all respects.

    They are very helpful and slaughtered two saddle backs at 180 lbs live weight, cut up into joints, chops and belly pork and made about 40lbs of sausage all for £85. Took them on Sunday morning, they were killed Monday and picked up the meat, bagged and labelled on Friday. I have already discussed the next pigs and they will cure the bacon and gammon and can also do Cumberland or pork and leak sausage as well. Very pleased with them.

    +We have found them excellent, their new plant is fantastic. Very gentle with the animals,very forward with any information and nothing is to much trouble. Fast service, most of the time our pigs and sheep go straight in and are killed before we have even had time to turn the trailer round.

    + I have always been very happy with their respectful handling of my animals, there is very little waiting involved (I think they have only once been penned for about half an hour before slaughter) and there is no problem about watching the slaughter procedure if you wish to do so. The butchery side is excellent – they ask if they don’t understand anything you have asked for, the meat is beautifully boxed and wrapped and their bacon/gammon is delish. The price has always been very reasonable too, and the service is always pleasant and courteous. I couldn’t recommend them too highly.
    +Taking pigs for 3 years now – they are very gentle with the pigs and cannot do enough to help, particularly for the uninitiated who are nervous and don’t know the form. The final presentation of the meat is fantastic and all at a knock down price.
    - My own experience here wasn’t so good: One of the pigs had a huge haematoma on it’s hind quarter when returned. That can’t happen post mortem. We also didn’t get our own offal or heads back. Maybe a one off but we haven’t been back to risk it again.
